Delhi celebrates Vishwakarma Puja

Sep 19, 2012

Vishwakarma Puja
Vishwakarma Puja or Vishwakarma Jayanthi is celebrated by all artists, craftsmen, and weavers. The festival is observed on September 17, the birth anniversary of Vishwakarma - "the God of Architecture".

It is believed that on this day the forefathers invented the plough and gifted it to humanity. The plough represents both the artisan trade as well as agriculture and therefore becomes the representative symbol of the ancient Indian civilisation.

Vishwakarma is known as the divine engineer of the world and is worshipped not only by the engineering and architectural community but by all professionals. It is customary for craftsmen to worship their tools in his name.

He had built several towns and palaces for the gods. Among them were Svarga (Heaven) in the Satya Yuga, Lanka in the Treta Yuga, and Dwarka (Krishna's capital) in the Dwapara Yuga.
